Having Your KIDNEY Donor Find YOU!

About the Program

The thought of Having Your KIDNEY Donor Find YOU! sounds like an unusual approach to living kidney donation. But this is what actually happens. By spreading the word about your need, Your Donor Finds YOU! This new program helps overcome the primary obstacle of living donation — the thought of having to “ASK” someone to donate. But, most donors say, “No one asked me to donate, I heard about their situation and was motivated to help them.”

Harvey Mysel, a 2-time living kidney transplant recipient and founder of the not-for-profit Living Kidney Donors Network (LKDN), has been helping kidney patients for over a decade by giving workshops at transplant centers and dialysis clinics. This experience has provided him with a unique perspective and a deep understanding of how recipients find donors. Having Your KIDNEY Donor Find YOU! is a comprehensive video series with graphics that educates patients about transplant and gives them the tools to mount a successful living donor campaign.

“Harvey Mysel’s “Having Your KIDNEY Donor Find You” videos are full of solid advice,  valuable information, motivation and compassion. Listen and learn!” - Al Roth

"Harvey Mysel’s video series is a must-see for patients. When I started out in my search for a kidney donor, there were no such aids and I think that his advice would have helped me enormously.  The series is informative, reassuring, and warm and will almost surely result in more transplants and a better life for any patient who watches." - Sally Satel, 2-time kidney transplant recipient.

If You Have an Incompatible Donor You Need to Know About: The Paired Exchange Conundrum

30% of potential living kidney donors are not compatible with their intended recipient. Incompatible donors/recipients need to be listed in multiple donor pools to maximize their chances of being matched with another incompatible pair. The Conundrum is that transplant centers don’t tell incompatible pairs about the benefit of listing with multiple paired exchange programs.

LKDN develops the first national campaign to educate the public about the need for Living Kidney Donors

Unlike the successful governmental programs that have educated the public about the need to register to be an organ and tissue donor, the public is unaware of the need for living kidney donors.

The Living Kidney Donors Network is a not-for-profit organization whose primary Mission is to educate people who need a kidney transplant about the living donation process and to prepare them to effectively communicate their need to family members and friends.

In the past 10 years the kidney transplant waiting list has doubled to over 90,000 people and many wait more than 5 years for a kidney transplant. There have been fewer deceased donations in 3 of last 4 years…and number of living donors was lower in 5 of last 6 years, both are troubling statistics.

The LKDN also trains dialysis and transplant social workers on how they can help their patients pursue living donation.

The LKDN Community Outreach Initiative educates the public about the overwhelming need for kidney transplants and the positive impact that living kidney donation is having. This program is facilitated by volunteers, recipients and donors who want to help the LKDN achieve their goals.

Watch The Search and the Gift

John Tait, a documentary film student at Columbia College in Chicago was interested in making the public aware of the challenge people face who are in need of a kidney transplant and the generosity shown by a kidney donor. After retiring from the Chicago Bears in 2009 after a 10 year NFL career, John enrolled in film school to follow his other love, documentaries.

This link will take you to John’s documentary titled “The Search and the Gift.”

I know you’ll enjoy this film, it is by far the best one that I’ve seen.

LKDN "Starfish" Donor Appreciation Award

To honor donors, we have created the LKDN “Starfish” Donor Appreciation Award. The award is a hand blown LKDN "Starfish" Donor Appreciation Awardglass Starfish, approximately 5 inches long.

The Starfish is a symbol from a story, (which is included with the gift) where a young man takes starfish that have been stranded on the beach after low tide and throws them back into the ocean before they die. When the young man tells a stranger what he’s doing, the stranger points out that there are miles of beach and thousands of starfish, how can you possibly make a difference.  The young man picks up a starfish, runs into the shallow waters and throws it beyond the breaking waves….then comments to the stranger “made a difference to that starfish….”
